Myra Melford

Even The Sounds Shine

Alive In The House of Saints

Myra Melford, maravillosa y siempre inquieta pianista de jazz contemporáneo.

Publicaré cosas sobre ella en este post según vaya habiendo tiempo...

Mientras tanto, os dejo los dos cds suyos que tengo:

"In broad daylight even the sounds shine
On the repose of the wild field they linger.
It rustles, the breeze silent.
I have wanted, like sounds, to live by things
And not be theirs, a winged consequence
Carrying the real far."

Fernando Pessoa

I have this habit of collecting seemingly unrelated bits of information: a title, a texture, a melody or phrase, that somehow in my subconscious belong together. It's through creation that the different elements become juxtaposed or integrated into a whole. (This is often the way I approach improvising as well as composing.) Both of the new compositions for this ensemble sprang from just a series of ideas,

Last fall, before I went to Spain and Portugal, I came across a quote from a poem by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, "in broad daylight, even the sounds shine". It struck me (as certain phrases do) as a good title for a composition. It wasn't until I researched the poem that I realized it made even more sense to me as an idea that expresses music and as an idea that I'd like to express through my music. Then, while in Wiesen, Austria, for a festival, I heard a bird singing songs that sounded like a cross between Ornette Coleman and Leroy Lenkins. I really enjoyed listening to this bird and transcribed quite a few of its phrases. Early the next morning I awoke to the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard (or at least it seems like that in my memory). The bird was singing right outside my window and a whole chorus of other birds and animals were singing and chattering away in the background, sometimes echoing each other. The texture had a clarity, vitality and gentleness to it that was very moving.

Very Happy
